Wed 9/8 – 7-9:00 PM – In the Company of Writers Guest Author Dr. Jessica Heriot

September 6, 2021 By Brenda Coates

In the Company of Writers presents a series of personal and conversational dialogues featuring guest writers/poets followed by an open mic forum. The Chicago blues music of “Mr. Jimmy,” welcomes you, continues during intermission and closes the evening. In-person sign-ups for open-mic are 6:30 – 7:00 pm and guest authors begin at 7:00 – 8:00 pm with open-mic readings from 8:15 – 9:00 pm.  These inspirational gatherings will elucidate and entertain those attending. The next in the series features Dr. Jessica Heriot, noted professor and therapist. She resides with her husband in Hendersonville, NC.

Dr. Jessica Heriot is the author of a memoir, Feminist Therapist: How Feminism Changed Psychotherapy and Me. The book recounts how second wave feminism changed her life, became her career, and transformed the prevailing views of women’s psychology and their psychotherapy. Her current book, Riding the Second Wave: How Feminism Changed Women’s Psychology and Mine, explores the impact feminism has had on her life and explains the concept of the “double bind.”  The double bind as Heriot learned in 1972 describes women’s struggle with two incompatible alternatives.

A psychotherapist for 35 years, Dr. Heriot was an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work, and a founding member of The Women’s Growth Center, a feminist counseling center, in Baltimore. She co-edited The Use of Personal Narratives in the Helping Professions: A Teaching Casebook (2014) that uses fascinating first-person accounts to bring real-world problems into the classroom.  Dr. Heriot has also published several poems and short stories

This event occurs the 2nd Wednesday of each month and is co-sponsored by The Brandy Bar + Cocktails http://www.TheBrandyBar.com and the North Carolina Writers’ Network. Tables will be socially distanced with limited seating. Location: The Brandy Bar + Cocktails, 504 7th Ave. E., Hendersonville, 828-845-0546, for sign-ups for the open mic visit https://thebrandybar.com/writers-open-mic/
